David E. Schrock

Shareholder Attorney


Dave is a shareholder attorney of Smith, Mills & Schrock and is currently serving as Second Vice President on the firm's Board of Directors. Dave focuses his practice on the defense of government and municipal entities, workers’ compensation clients, and nursing home and assisted living facilities. He has also represented numerous insurance carriers for more than 20 years in negligence, automobile accident and wrongful death claims.  Dave assists and advises numerous cities, counties and police agencies across the state of Iowa, in both state and federal courts, on civil rights, police and municipal law and employment law matters.  He frequently presents on topics such as police and municipal liability, workers’ compensation and employment law topics. Dave chairs the firm’s litigation, municipal law and nursing home law practice groups. He also chairs the firm’s annual government and municipal law seminar.

Dave is an active member of DRI (Governmental Liability and Health Care Law committees), the Iowa Defense Counsel Association and Iowa Municipal Attorneys Association, as well as the Iowa State and Linn County Bar Associations. 



Dave practices in Iowa state and administrative courts, as well as in the federal courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. He has also appeared before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on appellate matters.

When Dave is not in the office, he can usually be found outdoors, road cycling, skiing or kayaking. He and his wife and four children love the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, backpacking and exploring the national parks. He also enjoys coaching his kids in baseball and basketball. In the fall Dave can usually be found cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium and around the Big Ten.

Dave is a member of the City of Ely's Parks and Recreation Commission,  a committee member with Aiming For A Cure Foundation and a volunteer with Junior Achievement. He is a past board member with the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids and the Linn-Mar Schools Foundation.
