Formerly a fire captain and EMT, Skylar applies his seven years of knowledge and experience to his practice as an attorney at Smith Mills Law.  He frequently advises and assists municipalities, public safety organizations, and non-profit corporations on issues, including those involving police, fire, and emergency medical services. 

Skylar also represents state and local police officers, correctional officers, emergency medical providers, and firefighters.  With his background in law enforcement, emergency services, and corrections, Skylar frequently presents on topics including police, fire, and emergency medical service liability, in addition to workers’ compensation and employment law topics. 

As a member of the firm’s employment law practice group, Skylar counsels public safety labor organizations on a variety of state and federal legal issues, such as civil rights investigations and complaints.  He also practices in the firm's government and municipal liability, nursing home defense, trucking and transportation, workers’ compensation, and criminal defense practice groups. Skylar's experience includes representing clients in civil and criminal jury trials, defending clients in administrative proceedings, and representing clients in cases on appeal, including the Iowa Supreme Court. Skylar also handles transactional matters for his clients.  

While in law school at the University of Iowa College of Law, he participated in the Stephenson Trial Advocacy Competition, the Appellate Advocacy program and the legal clinic, where he served as a clinical extern at the City of Iowa City Attorney’s Office and the Human Rights Commission.  In addition, Skylar gained practical courtroom experience while interning in the Des Moines County Attorney’s Office and the State of Iowa’s Eighth Judicial District.

Skylar is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, Iowa Municipal Attorneys Association, Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors, the Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and the Linn County Bar Association.

Skylar is passionate about teaching, traveling, meeting new people, and entertaining his family, friends and guests.  

If he's not socializing at an entertainment venue, he's probably volunteering, relaxing or spending time with his family.  He spends time outside the office keeping in touch with former colleagues in the fire and EMS world, including presenting at special training sessions around the state.
